ABSTRACT

Edible mushrooms are a prolific source of bioactive constituents and they have a broad range of use as food and medicine. Due to the nutritional richness and medicinal properties, edible mushrooms have been used as a popular diet worldwide. The chapter aims to explore the bioactive constituents, nutritional, and therapeutic potential of Boletus edulis and Boletus bicolor. Phytochemical studies demonstrated that species belonging to the Boletus genus contained polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and lectins. It has a huge number of carbohydrates, minerals, proteins, and flavor components however being low in fat and calories. In addition to it, bioactive constituents and extracts from Boletus have health-promoting properties such as anti-neoplastic, hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, antihypertensive, anti-constipation, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral. It is utilized as a natural dietary supplement for the enhancement of immunity and improving human health. The potential of Boletus as a functional food and medication has to be explored and validated further.
