ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the promise of introducing philosophy and the other humanities into medical education research journals. Co-editing the Philosophy in Medical Education Series has had an impact far beyond the articles it produced and the citations and social media attention they have earned. We envision a medical education journal that features, side-by-side, articles that represent the full spectrum of knowing we expect our physicians to engage in when caring for patients. The chapter outlines with reflections on reviewing and publishing philosophical journal articles for an audience of medical educators, exploring who can do philosophy of medical education, and looks toward the future of the community endeavor. Medical education journals are distinct from journals of medical humanities, as if the science and art, the purpose and context, and the technicality and morality of developing physicians are separable. The chapter also presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
