ABSTRACT

The key drivers of global energy consumption are fossil resource depletion, continued population growth, and growing global industrialization. As a result, it becomes critical to look for substitutes for petroleum-based products. Biodiesel has emerged as a good candidate for further research since it is sustainable, disposable, and emits fewer pollutants. To increase biodiesel’s combustion and emission attributes, researchers are constantly concentrating on biodiesel formulation strategies. Adding additives, such as antioxidants, oxygenates, nanomaterials, etc., to biodiesel improves its performance even further. Metal and metal oxide nanomaterials as biodiesel additives have emerged as new potential fuel additives for attaining maximum performance and substantial deduction in exhaust emission, together with the latest fuel additives to biodiesel. In this chapter, a comprehensive study has been summarized to represent the recent research and development in the production of nanoparticle-based biodiesel. Furthermore, the challenges associated with nanoparticle-based biodiesel have been addressed, which require further investigation.
