ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an introduction to net-zero and positive-energy communities. It illustrates the net-zero energy concept for the individual building and the community alongside bringing forward the necessity of transition from building to the community level. By exploring the existing resources, it also reveals the associated tools, techniques, and measures for serving the net-zero energy purpose on the community level, especially through the adaptation of buildings, mitigation of outdoor heat sources, and on-site energy generation by renewables along with control strategies. The study identifies that the outcomes of these technologies have enabled reducing the energy demand along with yielding positive impacts on the economy, health, and environment. Finally, a conclusion is reached by focusing on the problems and challenges of existing net-zero energy settlements and making recommendations by considering the environment, energy, and economy toward achieving the net-zero energy purpose on the community level.
