ABSTRACT

The aim of the chapter is to present the monitoring and evaluation framework of the net-zero and positive-energy communities. The core elements of the measurement and verification (M&V) framework are the monitoring protocol and WebGIS platform. An effective and reliable monitoring scheme based on commercial monitoring equipment has been designed to record and transfer data to a WebGIS platform. The monitoring scheme is based on open protocols and includes the following monitoring equipment: monitoring equipment for indoor environmental quality (IEQ) data, monitoring equipment for building and community consumption data, monitoring the renewable energy sources (RES) production, and a weather station. The monitoring protocol is exploited to provide a set of key performance indicators for the zero- and positive-energy communities. The chapter analyzes the monitoring protocol and the interconnectivity among the zero-energy communities and the WebGIS platform. Moreover, the advanced and innovative algorithms developed for assessing the communities’ performance are analyzed. Finally, the lessons learned and best practices from the design, development, and operation of the monitoring and evaluation of the communities’ performance WebGIS platform are presented.
