ABSTRACT

Collection of pre-implantation embryo biopsies is necessary for providing a DNA substrate for diagnostic genetic tests. Biopsy can be performed at different stages of embryo development following different methodologies. In this chapter, the various types of embryo biopsies will be discussed in sequential order following embryo developmental stage: (i) polar bodies biopsy, (ii) cleavage-stage biopsy, (iii) morula-stage biopsy, and (iv) blastocyst-stage biopsy. In the last section of the chapter, recently developed minimally invasive or even completely non-invasive methods will be introduced.
