ABSTRACT

Herbaceous or woody plants with leaves of various forms, non-stipulate, arranged alternately or in a basal rosette. The flowers are hermaphroditic, actinomorphic, generally of type 5, with a double floral envelope and a bicarpellary syncarpous gynoecium. The fruit is a capsule, with numerous small albuminous seeds, having a small straight embryo and a seed coat that is finely prickly, granulated, or reticulated. 1 - 3
