ABSTRACT

Geospatial technology has evolved over the past few decades generating massive interest across the world. There has been a rapid development in terms of theory, technology and applications due to the contribution of academia, technocrats and end users from several disciplines. Geospatial technology provides a framework to support decisions for the intelligent use of natural resources integrating other resources for better planning and management. Applications are growing every day in all the walks of life and it is hard to think of any institute or government or industry not using geospatial technology. Recent advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have made geospatial technology a core field in information resource management. Data standards, interoperability, Internet, World Wide Web (WWW) and spatial data clearing houses are making geospatial technology cheaper and easier to implement and use. This article covers briefly spatial data concepts, data models, analysis, visualisation and the open research challenges in geospatial technology.
