ABSTRACT

The role of reactive power is very significant in the operation and control of the modern power system. The latest innovations and integration with various conventional and nonconventional energy resources have increased the attention of reactive power planning for optimized use of interconnected systems. This chapter presents the importance and management of reactive power with renewable energy resources in the present market model condition. Some conventional methods for reactive power management and assessment have also been explained with the integrated power system. Key issues with reactive power management like voltage stability have also been addressed. Modeling and tuning of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices are also presented for voltage control and real and reactive power flow within the integrated system using firing angle control methods. Reactive power cost models with conventional triangular approach are also presented for cost analysis, based on reactive power compensation using intelligent techniques.
