ABSTRACT
The term “Crude drugs” generally applies to the products from plants and animal origin found in a raw form. Comprehensive knowledge of these crude drugs is called pharmacognosy. Though it's very difficult to trace the annual growth and development of herbal industry, separate discipline is required to account emerging drugs, products, herbal industries, and total revenue. Emerging branch known as industrial pharmacognosy evaluates the commercial viability of natural products which are already established in traditional or modern system of medicine. Estimation of market value of crude drugs at national and international levels and accountability of the number of industries involved in production give the actual demand of the respective drug in successive year. Furthermore, production methodologies for the isolation and type of facility/equipment's/ingredients required for these isolation procedures again determine expense/budget required to produce drug at large scale. Standardization of crude drugs is also an essential step required to ensure the stability and quality of herbal formulations. Industrial pharmacognosy is a best source for getting more information about the standardization procedures of specific drugs. Additionally, it also focuses on the plants tissue culture science and its recent innovations. This chapter covers the entire information of herbal medicine market as well as its scope and importance at national and international levels.
