ABSTRACT

Because of the considerable benefits and the huge demand of the crude drugs, its importance maintains the continuous supply of raw materials to herbal product-based industries. However, owing to overexploitation, many of the most important traditional medicinal plants are on the verge of extinction and some have already been endangered. Owing to shortage in the availability of authentic raw materials, many practices such as adulteration, substitution are encouraged to mainly compensate the actual demand. However, such practices can lead to serious consequences and can cause considerable ill effects on health of the end consumers. Thus, there must be standardized protocols to assess the quality of crude drugs periodically. Pharmacopoeia, monographs, domestic as well as international regulation of crude drugs can be referred to assess the quality of these drugs. Thus, quality documentation is required to check the authenticity of the collected raw material to assess its safety and efficacy. That's why standardization plays an important role in assessing the authenticity of crude drug-based raw materials.
