ABSTRACT

Throughout this book you will see reference to the anorectal malformations (ARM) index. The ARM index can be used to estimate the prognosis regarding the potential for future stool and urinary continence for any patient born with ARM. The index is also helpful in that it provides a comprehensive summary of the clinical presentation that considers the interplay between the malformation type, whether there is a possibility of developing neurogenic bowel and bladder, and if the pelvic floor musculature will be well developed and function in a coordinated manner. Although the index is in the process of being independently validated, it has been applied in studies which have demonstrated an association with the ARM index and both stool and urinary outcomes. The precision of this index is being studied across the Pediatric Colorectal and Pelvic Learning Consortium (PCPLC), a consortium of colorectal programs (www.pcplc.org).
