ABSTRACT
Biomimetics is a new field in which innovations are achieved by strong collaboration between different existing study fields. Biomimetics has become well known as a new study field yielding novel manufacturing concepts on the basis of structures, functionality and reproduction processes of natural organisms. Museums play an important role in the accumulation of the information and provide seeds for biomimetics. The existing retrieval engines are based on metadata, such as text, attached to image contents. For overcoming the problem of the limitation of traditional image retrieval engines, which is caused by the difference of terminologies in different study fields, our platform visualizes all of the scanning electron microscopeimages in a database according to their visual similarities. As stated before, biomimetics needs close collaboration with different study fields for achieving innovations.
