ABSTRACT

The energy sector is undergoing a massive transformation. Along with solar, wind, storage and other technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT) is helping to drive this transformation. It is revolutionizing nearly every part of the industry from generation to transmission to distribution and changing how energy companies and customers interact. In order to explore the potential of renewable energy sources from the nature, we have to assess the availability of resources spatially as well as temporally. The infrastructure for the energy and utilities is first planned and then managed by different sources namely central government, state-level corporations and private firms causing non-compliance and conformance to global or required quality standards changing from time to time. This challenge can be fulfilled by using Information Technology and GIS solutions to enhance performance and improve quality of energy infrastructure in line with global levels. The geographic data and business data are used to develop GIS-enabled solutions. The digitized data of infrastructure components is then used for real-time monitoring of assets and analytics. These solutions are implemented for various stake holders including policy makers, power plant companies and distribution companies working with these systems. This chapter highlights latest developments in implementing GPS and GIS tools and applications in energy sector in various parts of the world.
