ABSTRACT

Calicut University Botanical Garden (CUBG), with an area of 33 acres, is located in Malappuram district of Kerala and was established in 1972. The garden is functioning under the Department of Botany. Since its establishment, the garden has developed into an excellent center of biodiversity and ex situ conservation of tropical Indian flora. It is now one of the largest university botanical gardens in India. The collections of the garden are mainly from the Western Ghats of South India, Northeast India, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It holds a wonderful collection of ferns, wild gingers, gesneriads, wild bananas, begonias, and leeas from India. The garden has also been focusing on creating awareness on conservation of rare, threatened, and endemic plants of this region by organizing seminars, exhibitions, and workshops. In 1985, the garden was recognized by the Botanic Garden Conservation International (BGCI) and in 2023 as one of the Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS) under the National Biodiversity act 2002.
