ABSTRACT

Botanical gardens and arboreta in Korea evaluated the Red List for Korean plants for conservation and protection of plant biodiversity. As for native plants, a total of 2,522 taxa were evaluated, and 275 taxa were found to belong to the threatened categories. Among the threatened categories, 64 taxa are classified as Critically Endangered (CR), 95 taxa as Endangered (EN), and 116 as Vulnerable (VU). In order to protect evaluated rare plants, forest biological resource reserves have been established, and by introducing the concept of an IUCN protected area to the DMZ, botanical gardens and arboreta in Korea intend to designate and protect Hanabusaya asiatica and Echinosophora koreensis as Key Biodiversity Areas.
