ABSTRACT

The plant kingdom continues to be the leading provider of phytochemicals used in various industries such as the pharmaceutical products, food, cosmetics, agrochemicals, with very high commercial value. Also, medical nutrients derived from plants have showed the significant role in the cure of many types of diseases. Polyphenolics like stilbenes are associated with many health benefits that include antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-atherosclerosis properties (Waffo et al., 2008; Baur and Sinclair, 2006; Delmas et al., 2006). The chemical structure of stilbenes (C6-C2-C6), characterized by two benzene rings attached with ethylene bridge. Stilbenes present broadly present in the plant kingdom (Gorham et al., 1995). The families of higher plants, such as Vitaceae, Gnetaceae, Polygonaceae, Liliaceae, Moraceae, and Cyperaceae contain stilbenes. Numerous biological properties have been reported in stilbenes such as antioxidant (Stivala et al., 2001), anti-inflammatory (Djoko et al., 2007), cardiovascular protective (Estrada-Soto et al., 2006), antineoplastic (Iliya et al., 2006), antimicrobial (Lee et al., 2005) and neuroprotective (Lee et al., 2006). From the last many years, more than two decades different health profits roles for all types of cancers, cardiovascular disease, aging, atherosclerosis, and many more have been 168associated with resveratrol (Frankel et al., 1993; Baur and Sinclair, 2006; Roupe et al., 2006). The epidemiological suggestion display that in France, the intake of resveratrol present in the red wine decreases the chances of all the diseases related to the heart (Renaud and de Lorgeril, 1992; Renaud et al., 1999); popularly called “French Paradox.” Resveratrol is also proved to cure and enhance the effectiveness of some antiretroviral drugs against HIV in-vitro (Opie and Lecour, 2007). Besides the pharmaceutical applications grapes are recognized as the best source of sucrose and it can be utilized for production of jam, grape seed extract, vinegar, juice, grape seed oil and raisins; it is also used raw (Hashemi, 2014).
