ABSTRACT

Amongst the monocotyledonous group of plants, the Amaryllidaceae family is broadly distributed throughout the world consisting of about 1,600 species in 75 genera and includes huge repositories of pharmacological important bioactive compounds. They are popularly known as ‘Amaryllids,’ having noteworthy importance in the floriculture industry and traditional medicinal practices (Nair and Staden, 2013). Plants of this family acquire immense ornamental value with the ability to cure many diseases and ailments and are considered as a top 20 medicinal plant family (Desgagne´-Penix, 2020; Elgorashi, 2019). It was used traditionally for the treatment of fever, swelling, malaria, and cancer and from 2001 in the treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease (Martinez-Peinado et al., 2020). The genus Pancratium is mainly found in rivers, rainforests understory, sandy coastal places, and dry places in temperate regions (Cedron et al., 2010).
