ABSTRACT

Hedychium forrestii Diels (Syn.: Hedychium dekianum A. S. Rao & D. M. Verma) is a perennial herb having aromatic rhizome shielded with brown scales. The members of the Hedychium genus are commonly known as Ginger Lily or butterfly Lily. Diels (1912) described H. forrestii based on a collection from the forest in Dali valley in western Yunnan, China, and it is chiefly distributed in south China. Later, Larsen (1965) described it in detail and raised a new variety H. forrestii var. latebracteatum. It possesses apically truncated bracts and condensed spike with flowers. Recently, Hedychium dekianum A. S. Rao & D. M. Verma is found to be conspecific with H. forrestii and reduced to a synonym of H. forrestii (Sanoj et al., 2010).
