ABSTRACT

The oldest botanical garden in Serbia, which has been operating from 1874 is the Botanical Garden “Jevremovac” in Belgrade. In addition to the collection of living plants, the rich heritage of Josif Pančić, the “father” of Serbian botany and natural sciences in general, Herbarium Pancicianum is kept at its premises as a special treasure. Today, the Botanical Garden is of great importance for the conservation of threatened plant species of Serbia and the Balkan Peninsula, but is also known for ex situ protection, seed bank, scientific and educational center, as well as a green oasis for the relaxation of numerous visitors. The Botanical Garden in Kragujevac opened in 1997 plays an important role in plant conservation, especially in central Serbia. In recent years, activities have been intensified on its arrangement and enrichment of plant fund for scientific and educational content. Court Garden in Sremski Karlovci, which dates back to the 19th century, in the last decade, has begun rebuilding activities. Nowadays, it contains operates with 100 plant species which have botanical value. For plant conservation, Arboreta Faculty of Forestry, University of Belgrade and Arboreta of the Institute for Nature Conservation of Vojvodina Province in Novi Sad, important as well. The current situation in Serbia indicates that although the conditions for nature conservation and ex situ plant conservation have not been met for years, the value of these activities has been recognized and their extent has been continually increasing during the last decade, following modern trends in nature conservation.
