ABSTRACT

Five arboreta and five botanical gardens are active in Slovakia. Short overviews and descriptions of all these facilities are presented. Botanical gardens in Nitra, Košice, Bratislava, and Zvolen are the most active in plant protection. Staff of these botanical gardens realize more activities from theoretical works and taxonomic works to in situ investigation, ex situ collections of regional endangered plant species, and close cooperation with nature conservancy organizations. Unique in the scope of Europe is the collection of morphological varieties of Slovak dendroflora, collected in nature in Slovakia. Also unique is the collection of regional old cultivars of fruit trees in Nitra.
