ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes emergency planning and response requirements for industries using hazardous materials in their manufacturing processes to ensure accidental releases are detected, and appropriate response activities are taken to ensure that accidents do not evolve into disasters. The need for emergency planning, procedures for developing hazard surveys, the planning process and training for response planning, notification requirements, and implementation of emergency response plans are highlighted in this chapter. Seven illustrative examples and eight problems are presented that highlight the need for emergency planning and steps that should be taken to manage emergencies and provide appropriate responses to protect human health and the environment.
