ABSTRACT
This chapter presents an introduction to the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. The topics highlighted include a general background and history of the pharmaceutical industry and the pharmaceutical industry group PhRMA, the role research and development plays in pharmaceutical production, various process descriptions commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry, and other operations and facilities of importance in pharmaceuticals production. Four illustrative examples and four problems are provided to demonstrate concepts presented throughout the chapter.
