ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the topics of health and hazard risk analysis by describing the components of these risk assessment processes that include for health risk analysis problem identification, toxicity and dose-response, exposure assessment, and finally risk characterization. These components are contrasted to those of hazard risk assessment that include problem identification, event probability, event consequence analysis, and finally hazard risk characterization. Risks and uncertainties generally related to the risk assessment process are discussed along with a brief summary of environmental regulations that apply to various environmental media through which health or hazard risks may occur. Four illustrative examples and four related problems are presented that address various aspects of health and hazard risk analysis addressed in this chapter.
