ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief discussion of the early history of chemical processing and its eventual development into the modern chemical process industry (CPI) through the incorporation of science into early experiential practices. Some of the major players in the modern US CPI are highlighted along with the incorporation of engineering into modern CPI practices. The sources of information for the practice of chemical and environmental engineering related to the CPI are also briefly reviewed. Four illustrative examples and four problems are presented that relate to the history of science and engineering as applied to the CPI.
