ABSTRACT

Emerging or newly identified contaminants such as personal care products, human and veterinary pharmaceuticals, pesticides, plasticisers, and different industrial additives in water resources and the environment pose an environmental health problem. Recently, many contaminants have been emitted to the environment due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the growing use of drugs for its treatment. Emerging pollutants in water resources severely impact humans, the ecosystem, and the water environment due to their unknown and complex nature and extensive use in everyday life. Therefore, advanced technologies for eliminating these pollutants from water resources and the environment have recently become the focus of attention of researchers and society. Membrane processes are one of the best technologies for removing emerging pollutants; their types, advantages, and disadvantages are explained in this chapter.
