ABSTRACT

The level of environmental degradation we are seeing today is unparalleled and one of the biggest problems endangering the survival of this planet and the life forms that inhabit it. Anthropogenic activities such as industrialization, urbanization, agriculture, and waste generation are some of the major factors that have led to the addition of toxic pollutants such as heavy metals to soil, air, and water. Apart from environmental degradation, these pollutants delve into the food chain leading to health hazards and also biodiversity loss. Cleaning up the environment or removing the toxic pollutants in a sustainable manner has emerged as a major challenge and an urgent need. Several techniques are employed for the remediation of the pollutants from environment. Among the various methods, phytoremediation, the method that uses plants to remediate pollutants from the environment, emerges as a promising approach.
