ABSTRACT

Blindness and visual impairment occur due to a variety of ophthalmic diseases which affect not only an individual’s mobility but also their quality of life. It is essential to reduce the burden of blindness and visual impairment for a productive and healthy society. Epidemiological principles applied to eye diseases, such as cataract, refractive errors, presbyopia, corneal blindness, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and childhood blindness, including retinopathy of prematurity, are discussed in the chapter, with special emphasis on global and national prevalence, epidemiology, and advocacy.
