ABSTRACT

The National Program for Control of Blindness was launched in the year 1976 with the goal of reducing the prevalence of blindness to 0.3% by 2020. The following chapter discusses the main objective of the programme with respect to avoidable blindness as well as the various other strategies, such as strengthening and upgrade of eye care services at various level, including vision centres at primary level, district hospitals at secondary level, medical colleges at tertiary level, and Regional Institutes of Ophthalmology as centres of excellence. The programme focuses not only on cataract but also on treatment and management of other eye diseases, like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, vitreoretinal diseases, corneal blindness, low vision, and childhood blindness.
