ABSTRACT

Health promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over and to improve their health. Health promotion in the eye care sector could be enhanced through health and medical personnel, including frontline workers; vision centres through skilled eye care workers; community platforms, including rural and urban committees, women collectives, self-help groups, and patient support groups; and institutions and settings, including schools, colleges, industries/factories. The reach to target population can be done through multiple media, including the digital modality. There is a compelling case for increasing health promotion and education in the field of eye care, given that the large majority of cases of vision impairment and blindness can be avoided through early detection and management. Eye health promotion and education should be provided at all levels of care, with a particular emphasis on integrating simple and effective education and counselling at the community and primary-care levels. Simple eye care messages go a long way in eye health promotion. Frontline workers play an important role in conducting eye care promotion activities.
