ABSTRACT

The giant honeybee Apis dorsata is well distributed in southern Asia. It exploits floral resources from natural and agricultural landscapes through seasonal migration. A. dorsata makes its niche in rural plains during rainy and winter seasons and collects huge amounts of pollen and nectar from the agricultural and horticultural crop plants such as Helianthus annuus, Brassica juncea, Raphanus sativus, Cajanus cajan, Cocos nucifera, etc. Similarly, in summer season, these colonies migrate to forest patches and gather floral resources from Eucalyptus spp., Pongamia, mango, etc. Seasonal migration coupled with its ability to exploit floral resources from both natural and agricultural landscapes made this honeybee a major honey producer and pollinator of crops in natural and agricultural landscapes.
