ABSTRACT

Despite the consumption of giant honeybees in several communities in South and Southeast Asia, Apis dorsata remains an underutilized and largely unexplored resource. The available scientific reports, although limited, reveal that A. dorsata pupae and adults are highly nutritious, high in proteins and essential amino acids, rich in minerals, and low in fats. However, investigations into biofunctional properties, suitability as animal feed, etc., remain an essential task in order to utilize giant honeybees. The objective of this chapter is to review the bioprospection of the giant honeybees as food and feed in South and Southeast Asia, based on updated scientific information.
