ABSTRACT

Polymers are abundantly present and useful to us in our day-to-day life as they have the ability to meet all the needs and demands of various fields of applications. The future of the polymeric industry depends on the development of the sustainable polymer materials which are obtained from terpene-based polymers. These polymers can be produced through chain-growth polymerization, cationic polymerization, and anionic polymerization. Terpenes are basically a huge variety of different types of biological compounds that are obtained from isoprene. These are a great class of aromatic compounds which explains the odor of various plants and herbs, like lavender and rosemary. Terpene-based polymers have a wide range of applications in biomedical and liquid crystalline materials which also have given contribution to the sustainable polymer chemistry. Therefore, the production could be made efficient by enabling the application of mixtures including raw materials which lead to the production of monomers having lower purity. Terpene-based sustainable polymers show improved properties in comparison to the polymers available at present. Sustainable polymers are the future and a good topic to be researched upon. This chapter focuses on the synthesis, characterization, modifications, and applications of terpene-based sustainable polymers.
