ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things have revolutionized the perception of technology by the scientific world in the 21st century. All of us are surrounded by IoT technologies and data compulsive services that have an impact on a large variety of industries such as automobile, media, medicine, and so on. In particular, the farming industries have also adapted this technological change in order to match up with the ever-growing demand for food due to the rapid growth of the population in the world. Some of these technologies are applied in a range of processes, such as measuring soil moisture in order to get the real-time status of crops for irrigation analysis to make the entire process more efficient. However, with every new technological innovation, some drawbacks are always associated. Here, utilization of the IoT and smart technologies has introduced a wide range of exposure to cybersecurity vulnerabilities and threats in smart farming environments. Such cyberattacks possess the power to convulse countries whose economies are heavily reliant on agriculture for growth. In this chapter, we present a study on cybersecurity threats in a smart farming ecosystem. We elaborate on the bifurcation of different categories of potential cyberattack scenarios on an automated farming system and highlight approaches for dealing with them through use cases. Further, some futuristic approaches are proposed.
