ABSTRACT

Flexible electronics have gained attention in the research and commercial communities owing to their application in innovative technology like self-powered wearable sensors, washable electric textiles, energy storage, soft robotics, communication, entertainment, and many more. They will be able to create a revolution in the field of electronics that will transform the fundamental interactions between humans and technology. Conjugated polymers (CPs) possess electrical properties like metals and deformability like conventional polymers due to their unique molecular structure. The most promising feature of CPs, which makes them appropriate for flexible electronics, is tailorable mechanical properties without a significant drop in electrical properties. Additional remarkable qualities are low cost, excellent strain range, high-density device integration, and simple and mass-scale production. In this chapter, after a brief overview of CPs and their relevant properties, we discuss various attempts made by researchers in modifying CPs to incorporate enhanced mechanical and electrical properties that have applications in flexible electronics. Their application in various fields for flexible electronics is reviewed. Finally, we put forward current trends of CPs in stretchable electronics and their associated challenges and prospects.
