ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the current policies and their problems. It introduces a new way forward of finding the benefits for urban development through using the natural sustainability of ecological system as a primer for the urban system. The design for a Floodable Eemsdelta has taken sea level rise and storm surge being the main climate hazards as the point of departure. The urban growth happening in Western Sydney erases the landscape and historic values. In order to prevent this from happening, the different aspects of landscape must be understood. The grounds are artificially enlarged into the sea, so an abundance of fish is living in a natural environment. The seaward development of fishing grounds is accompanied by a moderate and slow urbanization on new islands in front of the coast. The chapter concludes identifying the benefits of this way of mutual beneficial coastal development.
