ABSTRACT

Fig is a moderately important fruit crop with an annual estimated global production of one million tons of fruit. In India, fig is considered to be a minor fruit crop and the commercial cultivation of common fig is mostly confined to western parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. Generally, fig can be cultivated under adverse soil and climatic conditions like alkaline, poorly drained soil, hot and arid climate. Fig can be propagated by seeds extracted from dried fruits. Seed germination rate in fig about 60 per cent under the greenhouse conditions, zygotic seedlings usually are not true to type and are used in development of new varieties. Fig can be propagated by a number of vegetative propagation methods such as stem cutting, air layering, grafting, budding and by tissue culture method. Fig tree has gained more interests in recent years for its economic importance and medicinal virtues.
