ABSTRACT

Grape cultivation in India is distinctly different from the cultivation elsewhere. Grape being temperate fruit crop, undergoes dormancy during winter in temperate regions and sub tropical regions where winter is severe and temperature reaches freezing point. Plant growth regulators play an important role in grapes. The better quality grapes can be produced through the management of nutrients, water, canopy and more precisely by use of plant growth regulators. The compound of plant growth regulators like naphthalene compound, phenoxy compounds and gibberellins are commonly used for such various purposes in India. The effect of gibberellins on fruit set in several grape cultivars has been variable. Judicious application of growth regulators has been found to supplement and substitute the effect of girdling in increasing the berry weight in grape. Exogenous application of growth regulators, namely, auxins, gibberellic acid, ethrel and certain other chemicals during the fruiting season have been found to influence the TSS-acid ratio in number of grape cultivars.
