ABSTRACT

Jamun belongs to the myrtle family Myrtaceae is highly adapted to diverse environmental conditions, is widely distributed in India up to an altitude of 1600 m. Jamun, particularly mono-embryonic one, and is heterozygous in nature which does not produce true to the type planting material. However, rootstocks are being raised by the seeds. Due to existence of polyembryony, it comes true to parent through seed. However, seed propagation is not advisable as it results in late bearing. Jamun is commercially propagated through seeds through exploitation of nucellar embryony. The process of root formation at the base of stem cuttings can be divided into three stages: root initiation, elongation of root initials, and root growth and development. Air layering is one of easiest means employed for plant propagation. Air layers of woody plants initiate callus development followed by root formation at the physiological base of the incision.
