ABSTRACT

In India, mango is cultivated in more than 40 per cent of total fruit area. Mango is amenable for both sexual and asexual propagation. For commercial orcharding, vegetative propagation is universally adopted in mango. Out of the many vegetative propagation methods, grafting methods are usually and mostly followed for propagation of mango. Rootage is a method of vegetative propagation in which different plant parts are allowed to strike roots for perpetuation. Detached and undetached plant parts are allowed to regenerate roots and the resultant rooted cuttings and rooted layers are utilized for raising new plantation. Layering is preferred to cuttings in some species because the unit is attached to the mother plant, which allows supply of minerals, hormones and other metabolites and gives higher success in rooting than cuttings. Etiolation is a pre-treatment in which the rooting zone of cuttings / layers is kept away from the exposure to light.
