ABSTRACT

Papaya is known as a wonder fruit of the tropics. It gives one of the highest productions of fruits per hectare and an income next to banana as well as it is cheaper source of vitamins and minerals. Although several vegetative methods are possible for propagation, yet papaya is commercially grown by seed in all over India as well as well as abroad. The viability of papaya seeds is poor. Proper seed germination and seedling growth are most important considerations in successful seedling production under nursery technique of papaya cultivation. The fruiting is regulated at different times of flower emergence and at different intensities to maintain the productivity of the papaya plants. It is well known that conventional asexual propagation techniques, such as grafting and rooting of cutting have not resulted in efficient method for large scale production of papaya plants. Thus, the only alternative left to overcome the above limitations is vegetative propagation of papaya through tissue culture.
