ABSTRACT

Plant growth regulators have remained an important component in horticulture from time immemorial because they were effective means of quantitative as well as qualititative improvement in growth and development of crops. This chapter discusses a brief description about effect of plant growth regulators on plant growth and development, fruit yield and quality, propagation, and storage of pomegranate. Pomegranate is a fruit of sub-tropical region to semi-arid region. Pomegranate is a favourite table fruit, valued very much for its refreshing juice consisting of nutritional and medicinal properties. Pomegranate is propagated vegetatively by the rooting of hard wood cuttings, although the establishment of new plants requires one year. Micropropagation in fruit tree would help in overcoming difficulties of vegetative propagation, producing true to-type plants and rapid and mass production of planting materials. Pomegranate flowers develop into one of two types of flowers normally produced by pomegranates: hermaphrodite flowers and male flowers.
