ABSTRACT

Avocado is a nutritious and healthy fruit containing all food elements, wide spectrum of vitamins and minerals. Avocados are commonly propagated from seeds but the seeds do not breed true to type and this should be taken into consideration while going for planting of avocado. The avocado can be propagated by budding and grafting. Being planted as a grafted tree, propagation of avocado refers to propagation of rootstock cultivar, and then grafts it with scion from a mature desired commercial cultivar. Elite cultivar propagation is critical to maintain the quality of fruit and farm management practices. The discovery of compounds such as gibberellins inhibitors which act in preventing the synthesis of high levels of gibberellins has been reported to limit the vigorous vegetative growth phase in avocado. Three major areas of opportunities for control of development and growth regulation by plant growth hormones in avocado are vegetative growth control, floral induction, and fruit set and retention.
