ABSTRACT

Banana is an important fruit crop of tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. It is rich source of vitamins, minerals and has several medicinal properties. Propagation of banana through in vitro techniques has been reported by several workers using different explants sources and methods. In tissue culture, plant growth regulators are critical media components in determining the developmental pathway of the plant cells. Fruit set represents the very first step of fruit development. Biswas and Lemtur studied the effect of growth regulators and organic sprays on bunch characters of banana variety Robusta. Banana fruit ripens rapidly in accompany with significant changes of physico-chemical and biochemical attributes such as transformation of starch to sucrose, mineral reduction and flavor formation once harvested, which causes green banana fruit into notably perishable. Tran studied the role of auxin and cytokinin on somatic embryogenesis from cell suspension culture of banana cultivar ‘Cau Man’.
