ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the learning system in this 21st century. COVID-19 pandemic revealed the mandatory use of AI to connect people, sustain service delivery of goods and services, enhance blended learning modes, maintain commercial transactions, and foster environmental conservation. This research examines, analyzes, assesses, and reveals the implication of AI for the School of Building and Civil Engineering (SBCE) 106at Fiji National University (FNU), Fiji Islands. Hence, discussing the strate- gies and adaptive measures that should be accepted as a new normal for the school. Data were collected through interviews, expert opinions, field participation, and observations. The SBCE offers automotive, technology, and science programs which demand the integrated use of AI in order to thrive in this technological era. The outcome of this research reveals the need for academic staff, instructors, tutors, and lab technicians to enhance their knowledge in applying AI-first and foremost in their own disciplines. Then, this knowledge will definitely have a positive cascading influence for the school to become a leading catalyst in adapting AI solutions to adapt to any health, natural or human disaster in the future.

Research Implication: This research is an inaugural to further assessment in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) for the School of Building and Civil Engineering (SBCE), Fiji National University (FNU), Fiji. COVID-19 has painfully imprinted an unforgettable lesson to regard AI as an unequivocal integral focus of study for this tertiary institution in order to remain relevant in this rapid changing learning system. This research reveals several attainable and measur- able opportunities available for FNU to adopt to ameliorate its delivery of services.
