ABSTRACT

This chapter presents how past and present crises have had negative but also positive impacts on the nonprofit organization's (NPO’s) agenda. The competitive environment forces NPOs to adopt the concepts and strategies of for-profit organizations, even if the purpose is different since NPOs do not seek results aligned to profits nor to obey investor’s interests, but who seek to invest in people to address the social concerns. NPOs can be classified in different ways according to the context in which they are developed and the legal framework in which they operate. While facing financial uncertainty, nonprofit organizations may use several strategies such as adding new programs, implementing or expanding joint collaborative programs, increasing their earned income, and starting or increasing their involvement in advocacy. Organizations that are larger and more formal tend to reduce costs. Open communication and trusted partnerships between funders and NPOs are capital to identify the ways to support low budgets and goals changed or suspended.
