ABSTRACT

Other matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are grouped into separate categories, including MMP-12, MMP-19, MMP-20, MMP-21, MMP-27, and MMP-28. These MMPs have yet to undergo substantial research. However, MMP-12 is the most widely explored and studied MMP of other types of MMPs. Also, in many illness states, particularly in COPD, asthma, and respiratory distress, MMP-12 has been identified as a viable biomolecular target. This chapter consists of mechanisms in different disease conditions and related potential inhibitors that will be discussed in detail. X-ray crystallographic data and ligand- and structure-based drug design (LBDD and SBDD) methodologies are considered for creating and developing prospective MMP-12-selective inhibitors as efficient drug candidates due to the significance of MMP-12 in diverse illness situations. Therefore, this chapter might be helpful for future research projects involving the search for different kinds of MMP inhibitors.
