ABSTRACT

The usability and effectiveness of plastic polymers are increasingly changing with advances in technology and research. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are a family of polyesters. Poly(3-hydroxybutarate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is included in the PHV class. PHBV-based films and coatings have been widely applied in various fields, owing to their biological and physical properties, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, antimicrobial ability, non-toxicity, flexibility, strength, and easy film-forming ability. This chapter mainly focuses on the recent development of PHBV-based films and coatings. Further, this chapter gives the various characterization techniques about PHBV films and coatings and evaluation of its antibacterial properties. Further, few potential applications were discussed regarding PHBV-based films and coatings.
