ABSTRACT
Biocatalysis is an important field of research applied mainly to the synthesis of asymmetric molecules and is known as the connection between different areas of natural science and engineering science with the objective of making use of enzymes, organisms, cells or molecular equivalents to obtain products of academic and industrial interest. Biocatalysis is linked to biotechnology which can be defined as an interdisciplinary area strongly linked to scientific and technological research, whose main objective is to develop processes and products using biological agents. Biotransformation involves the use of enzymes contained in living cells, while biocatalysis usually employ enzymes that are in an isolated, immobilized form; that are not part of living cells; and that catalyze reactions in xenobiotic substrates. Organic chemistry has been focused on the development of environmentally friendly methodologies and sustainable processes with good efficiency and low cost.
