ABSTRACT

Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) care the public health in globally, because of their curative properties present in the form of complex chemical substances, such as alkaloids, glycosides, and essential oils. The cultivation of MAPs is increasing day by day because of their conservation, reducing the burden of forest source as well as meeting demand of global pharmaceutical industries. Besides, most of the plants have been facing problem of endangered status. The quantity and quality are negatively affected by various biotic and abiotic factors, such as insects, diseases, nematodes, and abiotic factors, such as climatic variation, lack of irrigation, and nutrient deficiencies. Among these factors, insects and disease are the most important factors for causing a significant amount of damage to plants. Pesticides are used in order to manage the harmful pest and diseases to enhance crop yields. Additionally, these synthetic chemicals might alter the therapeutic values of herbal products. Indiscriminate usage of pesticides causes serious ill effects to public health and environment. Research on pest and diseases is helpful in understanding the life history of pest species to formulate the suitable 518management strategies. Moreover, eco-friendly management practices are important. Monitoring of pest populations and disease epidemiology, identification, and choosing a combination of strategies to keep pest and disease at an acceptable level is necessary. The present chapter deals with overviews on diversity of pest and disease of MAPs and integrated pest management strategies for dealing in an eco-friendly manner.
